RVU Laptop Minimum System Requirements (MSR)

For all RVU Students – COM Years 1-3, PA Program, MMS Program and MSBS Program

It is the student’s personal responsibility to have a working laptop for all assigned assessments.  It is the student’s personal responsibility to make sure the laptop they use meets these minimum system requirements.

ExamSoft is the vendor of choice that RVU uses for item banking, assessment creation, assessment posting, and assessment scoring.

Examplify is the application that students download to their laptops and utilize to take assessments.

Below are minimum system requirements that RVU requires of its students to take all electronic assessments.

  • MAC and Windows are the only operating systems that ExamSoft supports; you cannot use Linux, etc.
  • Your laptop must have a functioning microphone and camera
  • You should have 8GB or higher RAM on your laptop at all times; 4GB is the minimum
    • Your computer uses this memory to download your assessment and save your answer file every 60 seconds, every time you select an answer and when you save your answer file for upload; if you do not have the memory storage, your assessment could be lost
    • RAM is used during your exam; if the exam has a large number of attachments, your computer will be using more power

  • You should have at least 4GB or higher of storage available on your laptop at all times
    • Examplify will save the final answer file to your C: drive; if you do not have enough memory, you will not have an answer file to upload

  • ExamSoft Minimum System Requirements can be found here:
  • Computers older than five years consistently have errors with ExamSoft and updates. If your laptop cannot successfully upgrade to a new operating system, you will run into errors
    • ExamSoft recommends nothing older than three years on their list of MSR.
  • No virtual machines
  • No Chromebooks
  • No iPads
  • Can use a Microsoft Surface

COM and MSBS students: For remote assessments, we require all students to have a working cell phone that can access the Zoom app. Please download Zoom from either Apple App Store or Google Play. We also require that your phone can stay upright/propped and stable during an exam; we highly recommend a desktop tripod if you don’t already have one.

Subject Exams – COM Year 3

For Subject Exams to be administered during your rotations, you will be accessing a web-based

testing portal from NBME. If your laptop meets the minimum system requirements from your

earlier years in the COM, they will meet the updated NBME requirements, barring you are not

using a tablet.
