First, using your RVU student ID (including three leading zeroes) and the link in the e-mail you received, download Examplify. If you did not receive this e-mail, contact the Office of Testing immediately.

  • To gain some experience using the software, download and take the 2022 Practice Exam. (The password is Excellence18) It is set up so you can download and take it several times if needed.
  • Examplify also has an instructional video and an extensive help document. If you have any problems downloading or using Examplify, contact ExamSoft directly at 866-429-8889.
  • Examplify is a completely secure application that shuts down everything on your laptop, including your desktop. Antivirus software can interfere with it, so disable yours before each exam.
  • It is your responsibility, per our policies and those of the IS department, to manage your personal laptop for taking exams. This means:
  • Bring your laptop and charger to every exam.
  • Download the exam at least 30 minutes before exam time. It will be available the night before.

Maintain your laptop appropriately. The IS department can help with issues of connectivity before exam day, but general maintenance is your responsibility.

  • Examplify will never randomly kick you out of an exam. If you’re locked out of the exam, it’s because you exited it deliberately or ran out of time. Make sure you are finished before you exit.
  • You must upload your exam immediately at the end of the exam. A proctor must see the green checkmark screen on your laptop before you can leave the exam room.

ExamSoft Troubleshooting

  • Most problems in Examplify can be solved by hard-restarting your computer.
  • The most common technical problem is virus protection software that interferes with ExamSoft. Learn how to disable your antivirus software, do so before each exam, and remember to re-enable it after you’ve uploaded.
  • If you’re having problems, don’t panic—alert a proctor. You will never be penalized for technical issues, as long as you’ve done your part.
  • Examplify auto-saves your exam every 60 seconds and every time you answer a question. It will not lose your information.
  • If you are locked out of Examplify, cannot start it, or cannot enter your exam, do not exit Examplify, just hard restart. You will start where you left off in your exam, with the amount of time you had when the program froze.
  • A proctor will escort you to the Office of Testing to get assistance if normal trouble-shooting doesn’t solve your problem.
  • In the event that it takes more than 10 minutes to resolve your technical issues and start your exam, we may give the exam to you in a separate room or arrange for a make-up (only in extreme cases).

Exam Timing:

First semester:

  • First course, 90 seconds per question
  • Second course, 85 seconds per question
  • Third course, 80 seconds per question
  • Fourth course, 75 seconds per question
  • It remains 75 seconds per question for the rest of medical school.
  • 75 seconds per question is also what you will get on Board exams.
  • Proctors will announce when the exam is half over and when there are five minutes remaining.
  • If you are more than 1 minute late (8:01 for an 8:00 exam), you cannot start your exam. A proctor will issue you a late card and you will take you exam, less the minutes you were late.
  • If you are 15 minutes or more, please fill out an excused absence form (on the Student iNet, pull down tab, “forms”) and the Director of PCE will give permission or deny the request for a make up exam.
  • If you started your exam on time, Examplify shuts down when your time is up. Upload your exam promptly.

Quizzes in ExamSoft

  • Quizzes are run by faculty or the course/Pod Administrative Assistant.
  • You will be asked to have nothing but your laptop on your desk surface.
  • If you are late to quiz session, at the Course Director’s discretion, you may not be allowed to take it, and will receive a zero.
  • Upload your quiz immediately upon finishing; make sure you see the green check mark screen that lets you know your file was uploaded.
  • If you cannot upload, hard restart your computer and keep trying.
  • If you have further trouble after restarting, come directly to the Testing Center as soon as there is a break or the lab/CIS is over, or e-mail us immediately.
  • If you don’t upload your quiz results per these rules or notify the Testing Center of problems immediately, you will receive a 0 score on the quiz.

Question Notes/Feedback

  • ExamSoft has a feature that allows you to ask questions about exam material or leave feedback for the Course Director and Faculty authors. Keep in mind when using this feature:
  • Finish your exam first–you can flag questions you want to leave feedback on. Don’t waste time leaving feedback and run out of time to answer questions!
  • Your name is attached to these comments, so please be respectful.
  • The faculty members writing these questions are experts in their field. Please respect that.
  • Use it as a learning tool, not to argue for points.

Post Exam Reviews (PERs)

  • There is a PER for nearly every major exam.
  • At the PER, you will receive a printed copy of your exam with the results, which cannot leave the auditorium.
  • No writing tools of any kind are allowed in the PER. You are never allowed to copy questions or take notes at a PER.
  • No laptops, cell phones, or watches are allowed inside. Leave bags, backpacks, etc. outside the auditorium.
  • PERs are one hour, and proctors must clear the auditorium for lectures following them. If you arrive more than 15 minutes after a PER starts, you will not be admitted.
  • PERs are very useful learning tools, and they are a privilege. Be respectful and mindful to faculty and fellow students.

Make-Up Exams

  • If you miss an exam, you must have a documented excused absence.
  • If you know you’re going to miss an exam, don’t download it. We will send you a make-up download later. These special sessions include a download password; main exam sessions do not.
  • It is an Honor Code violation to discuss the content of an exam you have not taken with a student who has. Do not do this.
  • If you have a problem the morning of a make-up exam, please contact the Director of PCE and the Office of Testing.
  • Make-ups are scheduled after the Director of PCE’s approval with the Office of Testing

Excused Absences

  • All Excused Absence Forms go through the Directors of PCE, then to the Office of Testing
  • Procedure:
    • Submit the absence form on the student iNet under “forms”
    • To make-up a PER, you must have an Excused Absence Form on file; you cannot review an exam without one.
    • Let us know you missed the PER and have an Excused Absence, and we will make an appointment for you to review.
    • Note: you will never be able to stop in and look at exams; you must see your Course Director, and it is up to their discretion whether they will review exam material with you or not. If you are having testing struggles, you should make an appointment with an Academic Specialist to discuss testing strategies.

If you ever have any questions regarding the Office of Testing’s policies or procedures, please stop by or email.  We want you to be successful and are here to help the best we can!
